I certainly saved two beautiful girls for my last blog posts of 2011. Didn't I? They were both great to photograph, as you can imagine. I really do love my job!

And...thank you. Thank you for checking out my blog. Thanks for being a part of my life. I am so fortunate to have found what I love to do. I've met so many wonderful people. I am grateful.

I know, I know, I have fallen behind on my blogging. Please forgive me. I have been totally swamped with work. Not only have I been taking care of my business but I've been teaching photography also. A reason to celebrate in High Point...

I love when someone comes to me to celebrate a big event. Give me a reason and I will help you celebrate! I've had clients ask me to photograph them because of reaching milestones like the big 3-0 or the birth of a child. I've also had clients ask me to photograph them to celebrate overcoming huge health issues like breast cancer.
This portrait was done to celebrate completing treatment for not one but two brain tumors. This kind lady was originally diagnosed in 2007. She had a tumor on her pituitary gland. After a few months of watching the tumor to see if it grew, her first surgery took place in Oct. 2008. Boy, that procedure didn't sound like fun. She said she couldn't bend over or sneeze for months! Hey, she even told me how to stop a sneeze. It works! Then another tumor was found awhile later. Because of the location of the tumor, a traditional surgical procedure wasn't an option. She had a gamma knife surgery in May 2009.
This health scare has certainly caused her to pause and take a close look at her life. Oh my goodness, she takes such good care of herself now! As of early last week, she has lost 36 lbs. by working out and eating right. She feels the best she ever has.
She is an inspiration!
This portrait is something she has thought about doing for years. She quit putting it off. Good for her! Being in good health is something celebrate.

Lights, Camera....now what?

Here are a few tips that may help you make better pictures:

-Don't forget your camera, batteries (charged!) and memory cards. How many times have you said that you wish you had your camera?

-Slow down. Look for interesting elements. Really look at what your are about to photograph. Look for lines, colors, s curves, patterns, highlights and shadows. Look at the details.

-Get closer to your subject. If you think you are close enough, move a few steps closer.

-Try a different perspective. Try getting lower, or higher, step to the right, then to the left and even walk behind your subject.

-Watch the background. Keep it simple and watch for what's back there...no one likes to have a pole or a tree sticking out of their head! Ouch!

-Move your subject from the middle of the frame. Imagine a tic-tac-toe grid within your frame and place your subject at one of the intersecting points. Also, with the horizon, try to keep it out of the middle of the frame.

-Watch the light! Open shade or overcast days are great. Bright sunlight is very harsh. Have you ever noticed how pretty and warm the light is early in the morning and right around sunset?

-Try using flash when photographing outdoors.

-Take lots of pictures.

-Back up your photos at least twice. It's not a good idea to leave your photos on your memory card for weeks. Memory cards, hard drives, etc. may and do fail. And please, please print your favorites!

I am so fortunate to work with the best group of high school seniors around! I am so impressed!

This is such an important and emotional time for my seniors and their families. I can tell by the excitement on a student's face when they see their portraits for the first time. I can tell by the tears I see in a parent's eyes as they watch the slide show presentation of their child's proofs. I feel absolutely privileged to be a part of it all. We have fun during the whole senior portrait experience but my folks know that I take the job I've been trusted with very seriously. And now my seniors have beautiful portraits that will last their lifetime and beyond. A session with a professional photographer isn't something you do every day. This is one of those times that I think it is important to invest in the highest quality possible. When I was a senior, I paid for my own portraits that were done by a professional...I thought it was important then too! Yes, there were cameras back then! I want my senior's children and grandchildren to have the opportunity to cherish (and tease them about) these portraits!

Susie is such a sweet and beautiful girl. Just look at her eyes!! You've probably heard of Susie. She is a bit of a celebrity. She is the Susie that Susie's Law and Susie's Miracle Fund were named for. I guess her story is a good example of something positive coming out of a very bad situation. Her mom, Donna Lawrence, has truly found her calling. In just the past year, it is amazing what she and Susie have done to help abused and neglected animals. They inspire me.

It's a crazy time of year!!! Beyond busy! And I'm loving it! This is what I trained for. I was trained to be a professional portrait photographer and I was trained to work hard. I'd be very unhappy if I went through all of that school just to sit here and twiddle my thumbs. Oh...I'd be very sad. To my seniors and everyone else...I encourage you to find your passion. Find what it is you are meant to do. It will change your life. I believe if you are on the right path, things work out.

This guy was so good to photograph. Check out his gorgeous eyes! Oh my gosh, I love the first image! His mom is an artist, she's great to work with.

You know, I really enjoy getting to know my folks. Our world has become so impersonal. I guess that's why I try to do things a little differently. I know it takes a little more time and effort but I like meeting with my families before a session. I enjoy hearing about you and the session you have in mind. How am I supposed to "capture your personality" if I don't know anything about you? I especially enjoy meeting in person to go through your proofs. Gosh, having you see your proofs and your portraits for the first time is like Christmas to me. Thank you to all of the wonderful people I work with. I am so fortunate!

I can't believe school is starting next week!! Yikes! Yearbook deadlines are coming soon! I have been so busy with my seniors and other folks (and pets!) that I have fallen a little behind on blogging. Please forgive me! I think I need more hours in the day or an assistant! There so many exciting things happening now!

Just in case you haven't heard, next Tuesday, August 17 is the date for the 22nd annual Hospice Taste of the Town. All of the proceeds from this event benefit Hospice, an organization that is very close to my heart. The Taste of the Town will take place at the Showplace in High Point (211 E. Commerce) from 5:30 until 8:30. There will be tons of great food, live music and one of the best silent auctions around. For more info visit www.hospicetaste.com. Hospice is a wonderful organization that I believe in. I traveled to Virginia to photograph a handsome 6 month old boy, Stanley. He was adopted this spring and loves, loves, loves his new home, new mom, and new brothers and sisters. He does occasionally munch on shoes, wood, toys, and pieces of furniture but we are confident he will grow out of that soon. Does he look a little guilty in the second photo? He was a little afraid of my camera at first but warmed quickly. Stanley is a sweet, sweet boy.

The other day a client (new friend) said to me that she wished she was me. She wished that she had my job. WOW! I am so happy she can see how much I truly love what I do. When I start a session and get a camera in my hand, I feel soooooo ....it's hard to explain. If you have had a session with me, you know how I get. You know how I act when we have nailed the perfect shot. You have been with me when we look at your proofs. You have been with me when you see your finished portrait for the first time. I enjoy the whole process. I enjoy everything from meeting a new client and discussing the portrait they have in mind to sending them home with a portrait they love. To me the experience is extremely.... fulfilling...that's the word I was looking for. This is what I was meant to do.
Things seem to work out when you are on the right path.

It's that time of year again. Things have really started gearing up for the Class of 2011 senior portrait season. I am thrilled about that. You know I love my seniors! But as I start working with my new seniors, I can't help but think about what is going on with my Class of 2010 folks. They are making big decisions about college and such. They will be graduating soon. Leaving their high schools. Leaving home. I am sure they are all suffering from a major case of senioritis. Anyway, I put a little something together for my Class of 2010 seniors and their families.

One of the reasons I enjoy photographing high school seniors so much is because I hope I can show the girls just how pretty they really are. Teenage girls are so hard on themselves. Self esteem usually isn't at an all time high. Everyone has flaws...even the models you see in magazines. Have you seen the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty website? There are a couple of good videos on the website that illustrate a little of what goes into the beautiful photographs you see in advertisements.

Girls you are beautiful! Have confidence in yourself.

Arts on Main

I am so excited to have several of my prints on display at the Arts on Main Jazz Club this week. When the High Point Area Arts Council invited me to hang some of my work at their Jazz Club, I envisioned a dark, smoky, bar kind of place. I was so wrong, the gallery/jazz club is gorgeous and I am proud to be a part of it! It is located on the first floor of the same building as the Arts Council offices, the old (and beautiful!) Enterprise Building at 305 N Main St. There is plenty of parking at the rear of the building. Come support the Arts Council. What a fun way to spend a fall evening. Great music and beautiful art in downtown High Point.

Last week was a very busy week. In addition to my normal duties, I did a 3 hour (yes, three hours!) presentation to second year photography students at Randolph Community College. I spoke to the students about starting and building my portrait photography business. I must admit I was a little nervous but it went very well. Luckily, I was speaking about a subject I feel passionate about.

And believe it or not it's October and I am still photographing high school seniors. It's a great time of year to for outdoor portraits....actually it is perfect!! Stay tuned I will be posting highlights from their sessions very soon.

She doesn't enjoy being photographed? She seemed so natural and comfortable in front of my camera. I had so much fun! Her beautiful blue eyes sparkle!
